Domain Name Registration – Some Ways To Go About It

in Domain-name

A domain name is a name you can use to refer to your website. It is the home of your website and often ends in extensions, such as .com, .org, .net, .biz, and more. There are a large number of extensions available today, but the .com extension is still the most popular.
You do not need to have a company or an organization for domain name registration. This process is open to individuals as well, who might want to create websites around their brand or ideas.

Domain names can be compared to the location of your website in the form of an internet protocol (IP) address in the World Wide Web. You can get these IP addresses and domain names leased from an organization known as the registrar. This would be an organization or commercial entity that takes care of the reservation of Internet domain names, accredited by a generic top-level domain registry or a country code top-level domain registry.

You would need to register a name you want with an organization called ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Even a couple of years ago, registering a domain name with keywords specific to the company product or service made sense. However, all that changed from October 2012, with a very big Google update. The domain names that were only ranking because of the name matches were targeted. This means that your site might not rank only because you have chosen a key-word rich name.

Getting ranked in Google has become more complicated today, and the domain is not as important as it used to be. The best way to go about it would be to opt for shorter, brand specific names that are easy to remember. You might try writing the name down to see how it would look on business cards and other printed materials.
Once you have zeroed in on a name, you would have to go to a registrar, pay a registration fee, and get the right of the name for a year. You would need to renew it annually for the same amount. There are some web hosting companies that would register your name for free.

While going through the domain name registration process, bear in mind that the domain names you want tend to disappear really fast. There are thousands of claims out there, and you would not want to lose out on getting a brand specific and simple domain name description of your products or services.

To register a domain name, you would need to check for availability of the same using a domain search tool, to ensure that your preferred domain name has not been registered by anyone else. If the domain is not available, you would need to try again using a different name.

You can also tale the help of service providers offering domain name registration services to further facilitate this process. These people usually throw in a lot of freebies such as domain forwarding, DNS management, privacy protect and more. You can also find a provider which offers a quick registration process at reasonable prices.
